أعلنت هيئة الأرصاد الجوية الأميركية أن الإعصار دوريان -الذي اجتاح جزر الباهاما مخلفا دمارا كارثيا في الأرخبيل ويتجه الآن إلى السواحل الأميركية- اشتدت قوته ليبلغ الفئة الثالثة، تصاحبه رياح بلغت سرعتها 185 كلم/ساعة.

ونقلت صحيفة ميامي هيرالد عن وزير الصحة بجزر الباهاما دوان ساندس قوله إن الإعصار قتل عشرين شخصا على الأقل.

وما يزال عدد القتلى مرشحا للارتفاع، إذ لا يزال حجم الدمار والكارثة الإنسانية يتكشف، حيث أظهرت لقطات مصورة من الجو فوق جزر أباكو بشمال الباهاما دمارا واسع النطاق.

وقال رئيس الوزراء هوبرت مينيس خلال مؤتمر صحفي “نحن في خضم إحدى أكبر الأزمات الوطنية في تاريخ بلدنا. يمكننا أن نتوقع تسجيل مزيد من القتلى. هذه مجرد معلومات أولية”.

وبحسب مينيس فإن نسبة الدمار في مدينة مارش هاربور، كبرى مدن أرخبيل أباكو، بلغت حوالي 60%.
