ناسا تعلن رسميا “وفاة أبورتيونيتي” على المريخ

أعلن مساعد مدير “ناسا” لشؤون البحوث العلمية، توماس زوربوكن، الأربعاء 13 فبراير، في مؤتمر صحفي عقد في باسادينا بولاية كاليفورنيا، انتهاء بعثة روفر “أبورتيونيتي” الأمريكي.

وقال مدير ناسا، جيم برايدنستاين، إن “أبورتيونيتي” هبط على سطح المريخ عام 2004، حيث انحصرت مهمته في قطع مسافة 100 متر فقط والعمل هناك خلال 90 يوما. إلا أنه قطع مسافة 20 ميلا (32 كيلومترا) وظل يعمل إلى منتصف عام 2018.

وانقطع الاتصال بالروفر في 10 يونيو الماضي، إذ هبت عاصفة غبار شديدة ضربت منطقة هبوط الروفر وشملت مناطق واسعة على الكوكب.

ومنع الغبار المتراكم على سطح الروفر استئناف عمل بطارياته. أما كل الجهود التي بذلها خبراء ناسا لإنعاش الروفر فقد باءت بالفشل.

وتعتزم “ناسا” إطلاق روفر آخر إلى المريخ، عام 2020، تنحصر مهمته في جمع معلومات عن احتمال وجود الحياة  على سطحه في الماضي البعيد.
